Potential Oven Fixes

26th Sep 2019

It’s very frustrating when an oft used kitchen appliance turns out to be not quite as dependable as you believed.

Electrical Ovens are naturally designed to cope with very high temperatures, but this inevitably means that some of components will wear out eventually. There are a number of reasons why an oven may not be fully functional, here are some of the more common problems we encounter. If you aren’t quite sure what the issue is, feel free to give us a ring, a lot of the time we can diagnose the issue over the phone.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

A common issue is lack of power so check your mains fuse box and check that the oven is switched on at the plug. These may seem like an obvious solutions, but in many cases these aren’t normally places you’d need to look. It’s easier than you’d think to have fiddled with one of these and then completely forget about the potential implications for your appliances later on. If you haven’t already done so, we’d recommend checking the plugs and fuses before calling in for reinforcements.

The element is worn out

This could be why your oven isn’t working as even the finest of elements still have a finite life span. If the element has worn out it may have blown the fuse, and you may be able to see a bulge in the element. But there’s no need to panic, it is possible to replace the element and get your oven back up to temperature without the need to replace the whole thing.

The thermostat or thermo switch is broken

Ovens are designed to operate at specific temperatures, they also have safety backups which automatically turn them off if things start getting a bit too warm. This is regulated by electronic switches inside the oven and occasionally they may fail. This again would stop the oven heating up. Fortunately these can still be replaced without the need to buy a whole new oven in most cases.

Broken seal

This can cause the surroundings to get hot or prevent door shutting properly, an effect of this is that the oven struggles to get up to temperature. While oven seals are tough enough to cope with some serious heat, they won’t be able to last for ever. Get in touch if you need to find the right replacement for our oven and we can help you get it fitted.

Dodgy hinges

If your oven door hinges are feeling a bit creaky it can be difficult to get the door shut properly. Again, failing to create a proper seal means you lose heat, waste energy and are at risk of heating up anything in close proximity to the oven. Luckily we are normally able to find and fit a replacement for these sorts of issues pretty quickly.

Faulty fan

Most modern electric ovens recruit a fan to circulate air and cook food more effectively. This is normally situated behind a grill at the back of the oven. If your oven’s fan is on it’s last legs you may well be able to hear it, any loud rattling or scraping noise is likely to be the fan.
